Widely distributed through Southern, Western and Central Europe. Absent from Great Britain and Ireland, Scandinavia, the coastal region of Northern and Baltic Sea, and east of the Carpathians.

Two subspecies:
S.s.salamandra Yellow-spotted F. and
S.s.terrestris Yellow-striped F.;
distribution areas partly overlapping.

Mating:
Terrestrial

At first development of the larvae inside female body. Birth of larvae after about 8 months. In March-July 8-60 larvae are deposited generally in shaded, cold, running water, rich in oxygen.
